Herbert John's story

Bell has Private J H Johnson.

Enlisted April 1915, 7th Battalion Rifle Brigade. Entered France on 3 September 1915.

Private Johnson was killed in action on 18 August 1917. Throughout most of 1917 the 7th Battalion was either resting or in action in the Arras area (Somme).  On 16 August it moved back into the front line trenches at Wancourt (some 5 miles south-east of Arras) and was not relieved until 20 August  Enemy shelling had always been particularly hostile, and as no major attacks were carried out during the period, it is most likely that Rfm Johnson died as a result of shell fire.

Thanks to Barry Langridge for his research on the men of the Rifle Brigade.
