John Charles' story

Also remembered in the East Ham Book of Remembrance.

Enlisted in November 1915 and served in 12th Battalion K.R.R.C. as L/Cpl.  R/16557.

In December 1916 the Battalion had moved to Guillemont (Somme) to take its turn in the trenches.  The conditions in the trenches were extremely wet and on 20th December it was again taking its turn at the front.  The following day a trench raid under Captain Dove was made on the enemy’s front line (almost certainly after dark).  However, the German garrison was found to be too strong and the attack failed.  During the raid one man was killed and Captain Dove and one man were wounded.  Although the name of the man who was killed is not mentioned it was almost certainly Private Merriman.
