Sidney John Blanchard's story
Sidney John Blanchard served in the Cameron Highlanders. His grave is in Kezelberg Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Thanks to Sidney Blanchard’s niece Gwen for this information about him:
“Sidney was my father’s older brother. He was the middle son, my father was the youngest. His father was a boilermaker at Yarrows Shipyard in the Isle of Dogs. When Yarrows moved their business to Glasgow in 1906 Sidney’s father was one of 300 key workers moved north. The family all moved too. When the Yarrow Cottages were built for the workers the family moved into no. 4. Sidney was born in Plaistow, London as were his two older and one younger brothers. My father Stanley Charles was the only one born in Scotland.”
This explain why Sidney John Blanchard served in the Cameron Highlanders though his place of birth is listed as Essex (Plaistow was in the old county of Essex). No doubt he was still known to the church, perhaps through relatives still in the area.
